The meeting of Rome will start from the "Declaration on generative AI" adopted during the G7 privacy Japan in june 2023. In the document, Privacy and data protection Authorities committed to assuring AI generative development according shared ethic and legal principles. Given the unlimited possibilities open to AI applications, in a world where the difference between personal data and not personal data is more and more fading, their protection cannot be overlooked.

The Italian proposal for Artificial Intelligence

The fourth session of the G7 Privacy will exclusively focus on AI Upon the proposal of the Italian DPA, the session will revolve around the role of Data Protection Authorities in the framework of AI governance, in continuity with the Kyoto Declaration on Generative AI of June 2023.

This objective has a highly strategic value, also considering the complex institutional governance that will result from the European AI Act (providing for the establishment of competent national authorities, with extensive scope left to the legislators of the Member States, as well as an AI Board), as well as the definition of an “effective control mechanism” within the scope of the Council of Europe Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence (a convention that is now been finalised and open to subscription by states other than Council of Europe member states). All the G7, including Japan, Canada and the US, are involved in the Convention.

The items on the agenda include the following:

  • Defining the characteristics of the Authorities involved in the governance system (more specifically, in terms of independence);
  • Defining the mechanisms and timing needed to ensure the effective contribution of Data Protection Authorities (both in developing and using AI systems);
  • Ensuring fair cooperation, including on the international level, among the Authorities engaged in governance systems at the national level.
