Insights from the G7 Event

How is privacy related to the free movement of data?

In all possible ways. In the digital age, people represent data and transform into data in each moment of their life, from the moment they get up in the morning and begin to be connected using their smartphones, tablets, or PCs, until the evening, when they get home and use apps for sports or health, or when interacting in any way with the web. This happens more and more, over an increasing number of hours. Therefore, people transforming into data need protection. This is where the protection of personal data and privacy come into play. During a three-day event, G7 representatives worked together to improve proposals for collaboration to ensure the increasingly free movement of data. The aim is to make data more accessible to companies and to simplify their operations.

From this perspective, the adequacy decision of the European Commission, issued last year concerning the executive order of President Biden for the United States, has offered reassurance to companies, especially regarding data transfers. While specific clauses still regulate commercial transactions, these measures aim to provide clarity and certainty.

The key is to ensure calmness for companies, establish clear rules, and enhance cooperation between states. Acting as a one-stop shop to reduce difficulties and ensure the free movement of data is crucial, much like what was done in the past with goods.
